CMI heads cries as House approves university Status

Dr. Fritz Pinnock, the Executive Director of the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI), shed tears on Tuesday as he watched lawmakers approve legislation to grant university status to the 37-year-old institution. "It has been a journey. It is more than just getting to university status. It is about changing the education and training landscape. Today is a victory for the young people without a voice. I couldn't help but shed a few tears in there. I saw our country moving on an issue that was not politics," he said.

SSL Launches Port Worker Training Campaign

Polaris Holding Company Limited [Polaris], parent company of Stevedoring Services Limited [SSL], launched its 2017 Port Worker Training and Certification Campaign. The ongoing programme is geared to certify dock staff in stevedoring and the most current hazardous material handling protocols and health and safety best practices. The training represents a collaborative commitment between Polaris’ management and the BIU. Osric Forrest, Director School of Advanced Skills at the Caribbean Maritime University is on island to assist with the introduction of the programme.

Maritime Institutions Forge Partnership

On Monday, 21 November, 2016, the LJM Maritime Academy (LJMMA) and the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) established a significant affiliation agreement to partner in areas of mutual interest in the education and training of students enrolled in maritime programmes at their respective institutions. This agreement, signed by President of LJMMA, Dr. Brendamae Cleare and Executive Director of CMI, Dr. Fritz Pinnock, is for an initial period of five (5) years, with renewal possibilities; the Agreement took immediate effect.
