Modernizing Port Certification : The PMAC Hybrid Training Initiative

Modernizing Port Certification : The PMAC Hybrid Training Initiative
The
Secretariat of the Port Management Association of the Caribbean (PMAC)
is pleased to announce the graduation of two (2) cohorts of fifty-nine
(59) Port of Port of Spain participants in the PMAC Cargo Handling
Operations - Intermediate course for Stevedores/Longshoremen.
The
maritime industry is evolving, and so is the way we train the backbone
of our operations—our dock and terminal workers. PMAC is officially
moving the needle on professional development with its Cargo Handling
Operations - Intermediate qualification.
In
partnership with the London Institute of Business and Technology
(LIBT), this program isn’t just about "learning the ropes"; it’s about
establishing a standardized, accredited, and sustainable framework for
excellence across member ports.
Efficiency Through Innovation
Recognizing
the technical nature of port work, PMAC has introduced a hybrid
training model. By leveraging the PMCP online training platform,
candidates can now complete fundamental theoretical training virtually.
This shift :
• Saves Time: Reduces the duration of on-site port visits.
• Optimizes Resources: Minimizes the financial and logistical burden on member ports.
• Ensures Flexibility: Allows workers to engage with core concepts before stepping onto the terminal for practicals.
Building Local Capacity
Sustainability
is at the heart of this initiative. Instead of relying solely on
external experts, PMAC is focused on training local cadres of assessors.
By working alongside international experts, local port personnel are
building the capacity to maintain high occupational standards and
conduct assessments independently in the future.
Competency-Based Success
The program distinguishes between knowledge and mastery. Upon successful completion, participants receive:
1. Certificate of Competency: For those who demonstrate mastery through on-the-job practical assessments.
2. Certificate of Training: For those who complete the theoretical modules only.
This
dual-tier system ensures that a "Certificate of Competency" remains a
gold standard, signifying a worker who is truly ready to handle the
complexities of modern cargo and terminal operations safely and
effectively.
PMAC commends the sterling efforts of the The Port Authority of Trinidad & Tobago team
and candidates which resulted in the successful outcome of this
inaugural training, and look forward to sustained collaboration in the
attainment of similar outcomes towards meeting Port Members’ training
goals.
